Oswestry Balloon Carnival
What is it?
The Oswestry Balloon Carnival is a vibrant, annual community event centred around hot‑air balloons and family‑friendly entertainment. It’s held in the heart of Oswestry, Shropshire, in the beautiful Cae Glas Park, organised jointly by Nightingale House Hospice, Oswestry Town Council and Oswestry BID.
History & Purpose
Originally founded to raise funds and public awareness for Nightingale House Hospice, the carnival has become one of the most beloved local summer events. Admission is free, but visitors are kindly invited to make a voluntary donation of £2 on arrival in support of the hospice’s vital services. In 2024, the event raised an impressive £37,000 for the hospice.
What Happens There?
Hot-air balloons
Around 20 balloons take part, weather permitting. Flights are typically scheduled for early morning and early evening when wind conditions are safest. All flight decisions are made by the event’s Flight Director on the day.
A highlight is the “Night Glow” on Saturday evening—a choreographed display where tethered balloons light up in time to music, creating a magical atmosphere in the park.
Live entertainment
Expect performances from local choirs, dance acts, cheerleading squads, gymnastics groups, and interactive workshops suitable for all ages.
Family attractions
The carnival features children’s football games, circus-style workshops, Punch & Judy shows, an alpaca meet-and-greet, a wide selection of craft stalls, and delicious food and drink vendors.
Extras include:
A hospice raffle with prizes such as a balloon flight-for-two voucher
Designated quiet areas including the rose garden behind the tennis courts
A pet-friendly environment (dogs must be kept on leads at all times)
